To provide a level of perspective to the ratings provided and to be fair to the developers and publishers because my rating holds little value if I am not the target demographic. Key points: - Cursor sometimes moves a bit fast - technically slight hangs/stuttering from time to time - Puzzles are often relatively difficult at first or you have to look at books for clues - long loading times (over 30 seconds, at least on the One) - no inventory - no NPCs (except for one at the very end of the game), only video messages in the books - lonely and scary atmosphere - Age story/backstory is conveyed through books - no enemies, time limits or risk of dying - Playing time: 5-10 hours, if you know the puzzles you can do them in 1-2 hours - inspired by the Jules Verne novel The Mysterious Island - Borrowings from steampunk 80+ΔΆ2m ProgressTarget Audience: No Overall Gameplay: 4 Art, Aesthetics, & Accessibility: 8 Graphic Effects: 4 Graphics: 6 Sound & Score: Good Autonomy of Pace: 10P Ease to Understand Mechanics: 2 Level of Stress: 7 Target Audience Do I typically enjoy these types of games? Yes, no, or maybe/not sure. It was influenced by the Jules Verne book The Mysterious Island, some things are also strongly reminiscent of steampunk. I don't know of any comparable game in the entire adventure genre. Nevertheless, the graphics have been constantly updated and the current version looks really good. It seems a bit old-fashioned and once you know the puzzles you can get through the game in about 1-2 hours. Of course, the rating is extremely difficult for the game, a bit of nostalgia also plays a role. The puzzles are extremely tough in places, the head smokes from time to time. It's also more of a very lonely game where you have to engage with the atmosphere, sort of the equivalent of ambient music if you will. But the game is quite special, so it's nothing for big bombast fans who want to be entertained, maybe a little old-fashioned in certain respects. For me it was a really blatant aha effect. I really thought until today, so to speak, that everything only happened on this one island. After almost 26 years, I've now played through the game and also learned about the different ages for the first time, which then finally explained the different pictures on the back of the cover. There are only a few slight hangers (stuttering) from time to time, but they don't really bother me. At that time it was just pre-calculated individual images, now of course it is completely in real-time 3D and graphically it now looks really good. Now a new version for VR has been released (currently in the game pass), with again revised graphics. In the years that followed, however, I never touched or dealt with the game again, nor the numerous versions that were published afterwards. I had always wondered why some pictures on the back cover looked so different than what I got to see on this island of Myst. However, I didn't get very far back then, the puzzles were simply too difficult for me and something like walkthroughs was unthinkable back then. I didn't know that before and of course it had a lasting influence on me when I was 10 years old. I also think it was the first game with a more mysteriously dark and almost frightening atmosphere. It was basically my first entry into the adventure genre apart from similar text-based C64 games. 10h PlayedI came into contact with this graphic adventure/puzzle at the end of 1995 because I had the retail for the Sega Saturn at the time.
